Classic or contemporary wardrobe designs- which one would you pick?
The battle between old and new, traditional and modern is always ongoing. The opinions on which front people are on are widely divided and in interior design, it is all a matter of personal preference.
When it comes to the matter of wardrobe design, those who like old-school preach about the benefits of almirahs while those attracted to more modern designs are in awe of modular wardrobe designs and walk-in wardrobes. We are proponents of the belief ‘to each his own and therefore have a way to cater to people falling into each of these categories.
To clarify, both the almirah and wardrobe are types of cupboards with very minor differences, details of which we shall get into below.
The Conventional Almirah
The almirah is a Desi word for a cupboard that is free-standing. Almirahs are never inbuilt or attached to the wall.
They could be made from a variety of materials including but not limited to wood and metal. It could be as large as a traditional wardrobe when custom-made but generally is a little smaller in size than the in-built wardrobes that are found in many homes today.
They vary from single-door to having three doors within one unit. Most often, the storage units within almirahs are shelves to stack items like folded clothes or keep valuables.
The exterior of almirahs is generally extremely intricate carved wooden wardrobe designs lending a luxurious appearance to a room. The metallic almirahs designed a few years ago used to stick out like a sore thumb in most decor, however, now the varieties which are sold by renowned brands across India can be designed to replicate wooden finishes and in colors that a customer desires, so that they blend in with the overall design of the room.
Modern wardrobe designs are cupboards that can either be in-built or freestanding. They are designed to keep the functionality that its user desires and every aspect of the wardrobe is designed for the customer. It can be built to blend seamlessly into the appearance of the room. There are several materials of which modern wardrobes can be fabricated and the shutter types and designs have options as well.
From an interior design perspective, a contemporary wardrobe may be a better idea than an armoire as it can be customized to suit any interior style. The wooden armoire unilaterally is focused on only traditional styles while metallic armoires could blend in with an industrial look.
